5.0 out of 5 stars 'Trying Times', 30 April 2014 Lovely to catch up with the old characters from Janice Donnelly's previous book, (Buying Time) along with the new, in this one.
Trying Times is about ordinary people, plodding along in their everyday mundane lives, money worries, health problems etc. Each has their own individual story...but they all come together, to make this a fabulous, and a truly heartwarming novel. More to come, Janice? I hope so. 5 stars *****
5.0 out of 5 Stars - Just finished reading, 'Trying Times' by Janice Donnelly, I really enjoyed this 2nd novel published by Janice and I must say, she draws you right into the story. It was wonderful to meet again some of her characters from her first book 'Buying Time' to see how they have grown and met with life's challenges.
Benny & Deirdre, enjoying retirement together and how their family have all left the nest. Coping with his Mother-in-Law Mary's, debilitating illness of dementia and how life has to go on. Also very nice to meet new characters and their exploits, Declan & Orla, Jo & Aiden, Cass & Gail. 5 stars *****
The story is written in such a way that you become one with the characters and you can't wait to turn the page to see what is going to happen next. So down to earth and just like everyday life we all can relate too.
A truly wonderful read..........well done Janice and I look forward to your next novel. Valerie Henry - Trying Times. January 21st 2014 5 stars *****

5.0 out of 5 stars - 'Trying Times' A reading experience not to miss!!! 5 Nov 2013 By shirls Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After reading, and loving, Buying Time, this was like a 'meet up' with old friends, and a few new ones added.
Janice has caught the Northern Ireland humour and temperament to a tee...this is a compelling read that I personally will go back to and had a deserved place on my shelf 'Books to keep'...
The nostalgia for ex pats will be worth the read as Janice has a knack of getting places and moments in time uncannily accurate and had me shaking my head and thinking, 'Yes I remember that/there'
Would thoroughly recommend and if you don't have Buying Time, why not? 5 stars *****
5.0 out of 5 stars 'Trying Times' - Ireland and its heartwarming stories by Janice Donnelly. By Mary Murtagh on November 6, 2013Format: Paperback Amazon Verified Purchase
Moving from your homeland to America is amazing. It also can also bring pangs of missing and longing for the things you missed back home. Everyday little things, how people talk, words used and even spelled, foods, their recipes and the chatter that goes around the family table. The laughs and the tears that go along with everyday friendships in a town that could have been your own. This book brought me back! To laughter, to tears, to pure joy at remembering how I once lived. Janice wrote this from her heart and life experience and I could relive it through her stories in this book. The characters are a part of my life from the first book to hopefully many more I will share in these fun, heartwarming families.!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars 'Trying Times' A novel of life and of love. By Marj on October 5, 2013Format: Paperback
This is a novel about real people, real problems - Cassie struggling with never enough money, Orla with her brute of a husband, an elderly mother with increasing dementia - how to handle it - problems that so many of us have to cope with as part of life. The best part of this novel is that it also shows how problems are resolved and how people can help each other. There are no big dramatic moments, rather, it is about the ordinary dramas of ordinary lives. 4 stars ****
