Well...it's been a while since I posted, my husband suffered a stroke in May 2017 and I am now his fulltime carer, so, understandably, my writing has taken a back seat. However, I'm delighted to announce the relaunch of Trying Times and Our Ones this week - both self published on Amazon, check out the new covers...

Well, almost Christmas - I have to say it's been quite a year, I'll spare you the details but it has literally been one thing after another, and not in a good way. I'm currently recovering from a fall that resulted in a broken bone in my lower back, I'm sporting a rather fetching body brace - I've no complaints it's doing the trick and I'm so grateful that the consequences of the fall weren't much worse. Looking forward to relaunching Trying Times in the New Year - in the meantime if you want to buy a paperback copy contact me directly through this website.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all! xxx

On sale now on Amazon - Our Ones: A Belfast Memoir
An insightful, revealing and heart-warming collection of memories about the joys and trials of growing up with family & friends - Our Ones - in Belfast in the 1960s and 1970s. Janice Donnelly, the author of ‘Trying Times’ and ‘Buying Time’, doesn’t hold back in expressing the mixed emotions involved in her reflection on a period when her hometown was changing from a city of love and peace to one of chaos and conflict. “By mid to late seventies redevelopment dictated that we move on or stay put. Most of us moved on. The entire community was uprooted and over a period of time the houses were demolished. Many of us scattered to different areas across the city. We were still the same people, the same family but distance meant that the nucleus became fractured and fragmented. We were still connected but no longer in constant touch,” she writes. “These are true recollections that take me back to a simpler place and time when the streets of my childhood were alive with large extended families – a vibrant, thriving community – and a great place to grow up.”

In the local supermarkets on Thursday - World Book Day - and couldn't help but notice masses of the little outfits still hanging on the rails - brought a smile to my face, maybe common sense prevailed.
14/2/17
I have noticed little dress-up outfits on sale in the children's clothing section of our local supermarket - I know it isn't Halloween so I consulted with my daughter and we took a closer look - Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz - yes, we reached the conclusion the outfits were to be worn on World Book Day. The prices start at £13 - no doubt parents will be sucked in to this commercialisation of this big day in all of our schools - call me a killjoy but I can't help but think this money would be better spent on books for these young people and imagination could go a long way toward making the outfits, just saying...

And, by the power of the internet I've reconnected with a very old friend from way back when (she gets a mention in Our Ones). I last saw her around 71/72 and I love that she says she remembers being in awe of me because I played the accordion - I laughed out loud at that as I devoted a chapter in Our Ones - My Brilliant Musical Career - to my complete inability to play this beautiful instrument, bought to me by my parents for my seventh birthday - I cherished it but I really did not have a musical note in my entire being!

Over recent weeks I've been gathering old family photos for my book, 'Our Ones: A Belfast Memoir' almost there now, many thanks to all family members who have allowed me to rummage their albums and collections - I know I've been causing discord in many a household as the womenfolk find yet another treasure and disturb the rest of the family watching TV... "Oh, look what I've found now!" Much appreciated, the hardest part is deciding which ones to use - the photos will be submitted to my publisher next week, I'll post when I have the publication date.

Good to see Trying Times on loan from Libraries NI - remember Buying Time is also available from your local library, the story spans 50 years from 1957 - 2007 ...
Buying Time review - By Sheila M. Belshaw "Sheila Mary Belshaw" (UK, Menorca & Cape Town)
From the very first line of this novel of the life of a young man, Benny Brannigan, who realises his dream to leave the provinces in order to taste the high-life of Belfast, I was hooked.
Janice Donnelly gets straight into the meat of the story, leading you on with tasty tid-bits of the reality of 1960s Belfast. It isn't all plain-sailing. You feel for this diverse collection of characters who step out of the pages of this book as though they are real. They make you laugh and they make you cry, and you can't read fast enough to find out what fate awaits them.
I've never been to Belfast, but now I feel I've been there. This is a remarkable debut novel by a writer who surely has a bright future as a kind of 21st century Dickensian novelist, but with a 21st century way cutting through to the very heart of what makes an unputdownable story.
5.0 out of 5 stars *****
And - Trying Times is set in 2009 with many of the same characters and a few new ones...
Review for Trying Times -
5.0 out of 5 stars - 'Trying Times' A reading experience not to miss!!! 5 Nov 2013 By shirls Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After reading, and loving, Buying Time, this was like a 'meet up' with old friends, and a few new ones added.
Janice has caught the Northern Ireland humour and temperament to a tee...this is a compelling read that I personally will go back to and had a deserved place on my shelf 'Books to keep'...
The nostalgia for ex pats will be worth the read as Janice has a knack of getting places and moments in time uncannily accurate and had me shaking my head and thinking, 'Yes I remember that/there'
Would thoroughly recommend and if you don't have Buying Time, why not? 5 stars *****

Pleased to see a new review for 'Buying Time' on Amazon.com - it's good to know that readers are still discovering my debut novel four years after publication. If you have recently read & enjoyed it remember my second book, 'Trying Times' is the sequel to 'Buying Time', with many of the same characters & a few new ones, this time around the story is set in 2009 as the UK recession unfolds, find out how the financial climate will affect them all.

Finally getting back to normal after my operation, my brace was removed at RVH last visit and the surgeon tells me I'm way ahead with my recovery (brace was to be on until mid-June) I've been exercising like a demon - so determined to make a full recovery. Of course, it is only when we are incapacitated that we appreciate our health. But I am getting there - I even started writing again this week. We took a trip down to Belfast Market this afternoon, great atmosphere, live music & lovely homemade stew - where would you get it? Well, I just told you! Delighted to bump into Francis McCrory exhibiting his art in Victoria Square - if you get the chance check out his work, his painting, 'Citybound' provided the cover image for my novel - 'Trying Times' - such a talented young man. I hope to be out & about again promoting my writing soon.

Things are very quiet around these parts - sitting with my leg up - in plaster, ankle to thigh. I took a tumble in Carrick last month while out food shopping and shattered my Patella - operated on in Royal Sat 28th February. So grateful to the hugely skilled, dedicated team in this great hospital, I received the best of care and attention at all times from these overworked and underpaid individuals, total respect. Painkillers keeping the pain at bay and books keeping the boredom at bay - binoculars are out of reach so no chance of a Rear Window scenario! Maybe now is the time to start writing that third novel...
